Blackout Poetry

Recently, our class created Blackout Poetry, inspired by the work of Austin Kleon. Using old TIME magazines from the school library, we found articles that inspired us and then got to work defacing them in order to create art.

First, look for words and phrases that jump out at you. Then, circle other words, or parts of words, to create meaning out of the rest of the text. Lastly, use a black marker to black out everything else. All that's left is your unique poem!

The poems we created are now on display on the 3rd floor of the main school building. Those who see them are very impressed.

Here are some of our pieces. Enjoy!

  1. Fascinating! Bringing totally original ideas out from random articles. You definitely need to try more of these.
